Creating Media : Feature Analysis

We have been looking at Magazines in preparation for your coursework. Below is what is known as the Social Grade which determines which members of society are reading/watching media.

TASK: Similar to yesterday's task, chose one of these feature articles to analyse. Print it out or paste it into a word document and answer the following questions.

Answer the questions below in as much detail as you can.

1. How has the feature magazine used images to promote their article
2. How has the magazine used their layout to make their articles enticing?
3. How has the magazine article used text to engage their readers?
 - Write down any effective sentences or quotes that are particularly engaging and explain how they appeal to their target audience.

1) In the image, Emma Stone is promoting Vogue, a fashion and lifestyle magazine covering many topics including fashion, beauty, culture, living and runway. vogue is 11 times more likely to be chosen as 'The Fashion Bible', than Elle or Harper's Bazaar. This statistic shows Vogue has a high reputation. the image of celebrity Emma Stone, immediately makes the reader stop and grabs their attention. As a reader, the first things that catches my eye is the colour contrast between her makeup, clothing and background. Uses of the colour blue signify loyalty and wisdom which reflect the characteristics of the reader which creates a bond between them: this feature is called the
Gaze.

2) This article is written in columns in very small serif font: the layout looks formal as it is set out like a traditional newspaper. Serif font is used in this fashion magazine to exemplify the selling product and make it look more expensive, luxurious and inspirational. In the middle of the two columns on the right, is a text box with a line of the article which has been enlarged to make it stand out. In the top left hand corner the graphic element 'initial cap' is implemented: this could be to break up a mass of text into bite-sized portions to make them easier to read. The use of small font highlights the level of importance of the image in comparison to the text.

3) The quote : 'Stone is the quirky, cool girl from school: the one you'd sit, next to, hoping you'd become cooler via osmosis.' This quote uses inclusive pronoun 'you' to make the connections/ relate to the reader in perspective with Emma. Her 'half - Disney princess/ half - cat eyes': this description makes her sound perfect and ideal.
